Balfour Beatty Construction / Gensler Project Recognized with Top Honor from National Design-Build Awards
Fairfax, VA, August 17, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Northwest Housing VIIIA, a student residence hall built by Balfour Beatty Construction and designed by Gensler for George Mason University, has recently earned a top award from the National Design Build Institute of America (DBIA).
The project received the highest honor in the Educational Facilities category. The award recognizes Northwest Housing VIIIA as an exemplary project that not only achieved budget and schedule goals, but also demonstrated advanced and innovative application of total integrated project delivery, including best design-build practices.
“The project was a complete success for George Mason in terms of construction, budget, schedule and move-in of our students,” said Steve Morehouse, Director of Construction for Auxiliary Enterprises for the university. “It is rare that all these facets come together so well on a single project and I am delighted that this team was nationally recognized for their hard work and dedication to our very successful project.”
Completed in 2011, the 216,770-square-foot housing complex consists of two buildings that are six and seven stories tall, with a total of 609 student beds. The project was designed and built to LEED Silver standards and was completed six months early. Located at George Mason’s main campus in Fairfax, Va., Northwest Housing VIIIA has helped the University further its strategy of creating an active 24/7 community to attract the best students, faculty and staff.
“Balfour Beatty is thrilled to receive such a prestigious honor,” said David Laib, Senior Vice President for Balfour Beatty Construction in Washington D.C. “This award demonstrates not only the significant design-build achievement of Northwest Housing VIIIA, but the continued success of the Balfour Beatty/Gensler team in service to George Mason’s mission.”
Don Ghent, Principal at Gensler, added, “Our relationship on design-build projects with Balfour Beatty and George Mason University has been particularly collegial and rewarding. I am proud that the success of the Balfour Beatty/Gensler team has been recognized on a national scale, and by such a respected organization as DBIA.”
The overall success of the project is accredited in large part to the collaboration and partnership between Balfour Beatty Construction, Gensler and the design-build team partners including, J.E. Richards, JCM Associates, Encon Group, Barr Concrete and Paciulli Simmons, and client George Mason University.
The project will be recognized at the 2013 Design-Build Conference and Expo award ceremony on November 5, 2013 in Las Vegas.
