Plush Pants Cloth Nappy Trial Scheme Keeps Over 1 Million Disposables Out of UK Landfill
Oxfordshire, United Kingdom, August 23, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Plush Pants Cloth Nappies, a leading UK online retailer, has kept over one million disposable nappies out of landfill, by converting parents to using reusable nappies instead - reducing nappy waste by a minimum of 213,750kg since 2004.
Plush Pants offers a nappy trial scheme – both online and through Oxfordshire County Council – that allows families to try a selection of nappy designs and brands for a fraction of the cost of new nappies. Plush Pants also visits antenatal and baby groups in and around South Oxfordshire to offer free advice and nappy trial kits as a way to encourage more parents to try washable nappies.
Eileen Robinson, Household Waste Reduction Officer at Oxfordshire County Council comments “Christine helped us set up the Oxfordshire Real Nappies trial pack scheme in 2009, and her expertise and enthusiasm have been invaluable. As the Oxfordshire Waste Partnership, the county’s councils work together to reduce waste and promote the use of reusable nappies. We are proud to help Christine celebrate keeping over a million disposable nappies out of landfill.”
Christine McRitchie, Proprietor and Oxfordshire resident, comments, “Since 2004 Plush Pants has converted 285 families to using washable nappies. We challenge parents to give real nappies a try using our trial scheme. Many reusable nappies are just like changing a disposable, except you wash them instead of throwing them away. No fuss! We know that 4 out of 5 families who try our trial scheme switch to using real nappies.”
Nappy facts:
The UK throws away 8 million disposable nappies every day
Disposable nappies are believed to take up to 500 years to completely degrade in landfill. If King Henry VIII had worn disposables, they would still be decomposing in a landfill site somewhere in the UK.
On average, a baby has 4,500 nappy changes before they are potty trained
Disposables cost around £630 per child more than cloth nappies
Using real nappies will keep around 750kg of nappy waste out of landfill per child (source: Knowaste nappy recycling – average child generates 6kg of nappy waste per week and is in nappies for 30 months).
