Ebook Version of "Counter Currents" Wins Global Ebook Award
Mississippi Mills, Ontario, Canada, September 01, 2013 --(PR.com)-- "Counter Currents," the first novel published by Raiders and Rebels Press, won a Silver Medal in the category of Historical Literature Fiction – Modern (set 1500-1940 AD), from Dan Poynter's Global E-book Awards, the premier awards contest for ebooks in North America.
Novelist and history blogger, Shaun J. McLaughlin, set “Counter Currents” amid the drama of the 1838 Patriot War, a nearly forgotten bit of history. That year, rebels and insurgents based in the United States attacked the colony of Upper Canada 13 times. The raids killed at least 85 participants. The British hanged 20 captured rebels and shipped 92 men, mostly Americans, to the penal colony in Tasmania. Called the Patriot War, this nearly forgotten bit of history provides the dramatic background for "Counter Currents."
The story follows the trail of Ryan, 19, after he arrives in colonial Canada at the outbreak of the Patriot War. Cast out, he becomes a smuggler amid the grandeur of the Thousand Islands. Eventually he crosses paths with the legendary Bill Johnston, the so-called Pirate of the Thousand Islands.
While fiction, the book sticks to historical facts and includes many characters who played roles in the Patriot War. McLaughlin says he had great fun weaving his fictional protagonist into historical events.
“I had Ryan join Bill Johnston for his signature event—the looting and burning of the Sir Robert Peel. I had him chatting over tea with a young lawyer in Kingston, John A. Macdonald, who later became the first prime minister of Canada. And because both men played exactly the roles in history that I gave them in the book, the story resonates with credibility.”
As the story develops, Ryan falls for Johnston’s daughter, Kate, a legend in her own right. Ryan is coached by her older cousin Ada on how to capture Kate’s heart. Over time, Ada develops feelings for Ryan and he in turn grapples with his attraction to Ada. Chance and circumstance drive Ryan into a web of piracy, secret societies, rebellion and war. As Ryan struggles to reconcile his family history, his duty and his heart amidst the opposing currents of romance and war, he stands to either win the woman he loves, die on the noose, or toil a lifetime in a distant penal colony.
This e-book, Mr. McLaughlin’s debut novel, is available through Amazon, Smashwords, Kobo, Barnes & Noble and other outlets. A sequel to "Counter Currents" will appear in 2014.
