Jim Dodson Law Supports Child Passenger Safety Week
Fort Myers, FL, September 14, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Florida has designated Sept. 16 through Sept. 20 as Child Passenger Safety Week and Sept. 21 as Seat Check Saturday. Florida personal injury law firm, Jim Dodson Law, will be supporting the week dedicated to reducing fatal vehicle accidents involving children by promoting the use of seat belts for children.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for children ages one to thirteen. In 2011, 655 children tragically died in wrecks. One out of every three of the children who were killed, were not wearing seat belts.
When a child is involved in a wreck and is not wearing a seat belt, most commonly, the child dies as a result of being ejected from the vehicle. The CDC reports wearing a seat belt reduces an infant’s chance of being killed in an accident by seventy-two percent and a toddler’s chance of being killed in a crash by fifty-four percent.
A recent study found three out of four car seats are installed incorrectly, which could lead to brain or spinal injuries if a child is involved in a wreck. To avoid a tragedy, adults must ensure children ages three and younger are always buckled into a properly installed car seat in the back seat of the vehicle with a child safety belt. Children, ages four and over, should also be buckled in the back seat with a properly fitted seat belt.
“As adults and parents, it is our job to protect our child passengers by using the proper safety measures such as car seats, booster seats, and seat belts. Child deaths caused by vehicle crashes can be preventable if we protect our kids by following Florida’s seat belt laws. I urge you to buckle your children in even if you are only driving a mile down the road. It could be the difference between life and death,” said safety advocate and Florida car accident attorney Jim Dodson.
