Buro Happold Uses Creative Engineering for Pinnacle Bank Arena, Lincoln’s Newest Icon
Lincoln, NE, September 15, 2013 --(PR.com)-- International engineering firm Buro Happold designed an innovative and cost effective structural system for the Pinnacle Bank Arena. The new arena creates an unmatched venue for sports and serves as a catalyst for urban redevelopment.
Buro Happold announces the opening of the 16,500-seat Pinnacle Bank Arena, the new home for the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers (aka “The Huskers”) men’s and women’s basketball teams, in Lincoln, Nebraska. Structural engineer Buro Happold, architect DLR Group in Omaha and Lincoln, and construction managers Mortenson Construction and Hampton Enterprises in Minneapolis, collaborated to design and build a prominent structure on a challenging urban site.
The construction took place between two then-active rail lines in downtown Lincoln over a full year (the rail lines have since been dismantled). To complete the project on time, Buro Happold designed a hybrid concrete and steel structure that could be built before and during the removal of the tracks.
The arena is a landmark in the West Haymarket neighborhood. The anticipated increase in foot traffic that Pinnacle will cause has spurred a recent wave of new businesses in the area. Hotels, retail outlets, and restaurants have begun to pop up in the former warehouse district.
The University is happy to have a new home for their basketball programs. Director of Athletics for the University of Nebraska, Shawn Eichorst, cannot wait to start the upcoming basketball season in the iconic new stadium.
"We are pleased to kick off the season in the Pinnacle Bank Arena. It will be an exciting place for our student-athletes to compete, and for UNL students and Husker fans to come out and enjoy the games. We appreciate the hard work that went into this project and all that Buro Happold and the DLR Group have done to make it special," Eichorst said.
Erleen Hatfield, a principal at Buro Happold and a Lincoln native said, “The team here at Buro Happold is proud to be a part of this iconic arena. This was a challenging project and we are thrilled at the outcome.”
In addition to standing as the home of the Huskers, the stadium will also serve as a concert venue. The arena’s first concert will take place tonight.
