Steps to Independence Holds Fourth Annual 5K
Pittsburgh, PA, September 19, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Sunday September 15, 2013, marked Steps to Independence’s fourth annual 5k run/walk fundraiser. Steps to Independence is a Pittsburgh-based nonprofit that provides conductive education for children with motor disabilities. Their mission is to help their students achieve physical, social, and psychological independence through an active learning process and peer interaction. They offer school-year programs, as well as summer camps and after-school programs. Steps to Independence is primarily a volunteer staffed organization.
140 participants completed the 5k, including several Steps to Independence students and their families. Top three finishers in the men’s race were Luke Zak, Ted Casey, and Jason Luhn. Deanna Wiff, Mary Goldberg, and Michelle Sporner finished top three for the women, while Jack Mill, Lucas Paszek, and Mike Komara were the top finishers in the youth division. In all, over $4,000 was raised at the event. All funds raised will go to underwriting tuition for students in order to keep costs affordable for all. Additional funds will go to provide scholarships for students attending Steps to Independence summer camps.
Volunteers from Pittsburgh’s Side Project Inc. were also on hand to participate in the 5k as well as to award Steps to Independence with a check for $1,750, money which was raised at Side Project’s Tail-GREAT fundraiser held in July. Side Project Inc. is a nonprofit with offices in Pittsburgh and Palm Beach County, Florida, which offers legal and professional support to community minded individuals, organizations, and nonprofits. The Tail-GREAT is Side Project’s signature charity fundraising event, and this year it was able to bring together over 500 people to share in an afternoon of community, fun, and giving. This year, Tail-GREAT’s beneficiaries included Steps to Independence, Animal Rescue League of Western Pennsylvania, and Community Living and Support Services. Side Project Director of Community Outreach, Adam Causgrove, was proud to announce that this year’s donation from the Tail-GREAT brought the total donated to Steps to Independence to over $5,000 in the last three years.
