The type 316 Shim Stock material is an austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel containing 2.0 to 3.0% corrosion-resistant molybdenum which not only increases general corrosion resistance to most chemicals, salts, and acids but also provides increased strength at elevated temperatures.
The 316 Stainless Steel Shim Stock comes in both rolls and sheets. The stainless steel shim rolls are available in 6” x 50”, 6 x 100”, 12” x 50”, and 12” x 100”, in thicknesses of .001 in, .002 in, .003 in, .004in, .005 in, .007 in, .010 in, .012 in, .015 in, .020 in, .025 in, and .031 in. The 316 stainless steel shim sheets are available in 6” x 12” and 6” x 24”. The 6” x 12” sheets include thicknesses of .001 in, .002 in, .003 in, .004in, .005 in, .007 in, .010 in, .012 in, .015 in, .020 in, .025 in, and .031 in. Thicknesses of .025 and .031 in the 12” inch-wide material are only available in flat sheets. A 12 piece individual sheet assortment containing one 6” x 12” sheet of each of the 12 standard thicknesses is also available.
Typical uses for 316 stainless steel are: exhaust manifolds, furnace parts, heat exchangers, jet engine parts, pharmaceutical and photographic equipment, valve and pump trim, chemical equipment, digesters, tanks, evaporators, pulp, paper and textile processing equipment, parts exposed to marine atmospheres, and multiple forms of tubing.
