Putnam Ridge Proudly Celebrates Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Putnam Ridge, a leading skilled nursing facility in New York, spreads awareness of risk reducing activities for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Brewster, NY, October 10, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Putnam Ridge, a premier skilled nursing facility in Brewster, New York, welcomes the arrival of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and is spreading the word about risk reducing activities and preventative steps that can be taken to help fight the disease.
According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 220,000 women and 2000 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer every year. In the United States alone, breast cancer is the most common non-skin cancer in women and the second leading cause of cancer-related death in women. Even though the rate of cancer diagnoses has increased over the years, there has been a steady decline in cases of death since the early 1990’s. Yearly, it is estimated that around $8 billion is spent in the United States each year on breast cancer related treatment.
While it is unclear as to what particularly causes breast cancer, there are ways to reduce your risk of diagnosis. According to the Cancer Society of America, some strategies that may help reduce risk include avoiding weight gain and obesity, engaging in regular physical activity and minimizing alcohol intake. Use of estrogen and progestin for treatment of menopausal symptoms have been shown to increase a woman’s risk of developing the disease, along with tobacco use, environmental pollutants and exposure to radiation. Ultimately, it is recommended that women over 40 have a mammogram once a year to screen for the development of cancer cells.
“Here at Putnam Ridge, we take Breast Cancer Awareness Month seriously and encourage every woman to go out and have a mammogram at least once per year. Mammograms detect the growth of cancer cells and can save many lives. Knowledge is power and we hope to see the number of cases reduced until a cure can be found,” said Rosemarie Pottinger, Administrator at Putnam Ridge.
