Oceanside, NY, October 10, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Oceanside Care Center, a premier skilled nursing facility in Oceanside, New York, welcomes the arrival of October Breast Cancer Awareness Month and is helping to spread the word about certain risk reducing activities and preventative steps that can be taken to help fight the disease.
Breast cancer is the most common non-skin cancer in women in the United States and the second leading cause of cancer related death in women. According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 220,000 women and 2000 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer every year. Even though the rate of cancer diagnoses has increased over the years, there has been a steady decline in cases of death since the early 1990’s. Yearly, it is estimated that around $8 billion is spent in the United States each year on breast cancer related treatment.
“October Breast Cancer Awareness Month is very important to all of us here at Oceanside Care Center. All of us have been impacted by breast cancer and we can only hope and pray for a cure. We applaud the steps that have been taken to lower the amount of lives lost to this deadly disease. This month we help spread awareness of risk reducing practices in the hope that fewer women and men will suffer from it,” said Kellie O’Connor, Admissions Director at Oceanside Care Center.
It is recommended that women over 40 have a mammogram once a year to screen for the development of cancer cells. While it is unclear as to what particularly causes breast cancer, there are ways to lower your risk. According to the Cancer Society of America, some strategies that may help reduce risk include avoiding weight gain and obesity, engaging in regular physical activity and minimizing alcohol intake. Use of estrogen and progestin for treatment of menopausal symptoms have been shown to increase a woman’s risk of developing the disease, along with tobacco use, environmental pollutants and exposure to radiation.
