Long® Fence is Puppy Sponsor for Hero Dogs, Inc. Service Dogs for Wounded Veterans
Frederick, MD, October 10, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Archibald Henderson "Archie," a three-and-a-half-month old chocolate Labrador Retriever, came to visit Long® Fence in Ijamsville, MD on Friday, October 4, 2013. Archie is learning to be a service dog and social outings are just one part of a service dog’s intensive training. Long® Fence is Archie’s Puppy Sponsor through Hero Dogs, Inc., a non-profit corporation whose mission is to provide independence and improved quality of life to our nation’s veterans by raising, training, and placing service dogs ("Hero Dogs") with injured or disabled military veterans who have served honorably in the United States Armed Forces. There is zero cost to the veteran.
A Hero Dogs Puppy Sponsor makes a donation that covers most of the puppy's basic supplies and routine care up until the time he is matched with a veteran for team training, usually at around 20 months of age. Durable items purchased by the sponsorship are transferred from the puppy raiser home to his new home with his partner. Thus, the sponsorship not only helps offset costs for the puppy raiser, but for the veteran as well. Service dogs graduate from the program to live full time with the veteran after approximately 30 months of training.
"We’re honored to be part of this program," said Karen Richey, Long® Fence marketing manager. "Hero Dogs is such a good cause, run by volunteers who are very committed to the training and partnering of dog and veteran. We learned a lot today, meeting with Barbara from Hero Dogs and Sandy, a Hero Dogs puppy sitter, and of course, Archie. It will be fun to watch Archie’s development into a full-fledged Hero Dog."
Archie was named for Archibald Henderson, the longest-serving Commandant of the United States Marine Corps, serving from 1820-1859. To find out more about Hero Dogs, Inc., visit http://www.hero-dogs.org.
