Keansburg, NJ, October 11, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Laurel Bay Health and Rehabilitation Center, a leading skilled nursing facility in Keansburg, New Jersey, welcomes the arrival of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and is spreading the word about risk reducing activities and preventative steps that can be taken to help fight the disease.

Breast cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer in the world. One in eight women will have a breast cancer diagnosis in their lifetime, while in men it is significantly more rare. It is estimated that at least 220,000 women and 2000 men will be diagnosed with the disease every year, according to the World Health Organization. While the number of people given a positive diagnosis for breast cancer each year has increased, the number of deaths has significantly decreased since the 1990's. An estimated $8 billion is spent in the United States on breast cancer related treatment every year.

What causes breast cancer to develop is unclear. However, there are ways to reduce your risk of diagnosis. According to the Cancer Society of America, some strategies that may help reduce risk include avoiding weight gain and obesity, engaging in regular physical activity and minimizing alcohol intake. Use of estrogen and progestin for treatment of menopausal symptoms have been shown to increase a woman’s risk of developing the disease, along with tobacco use, environmental pollutants and exposure to radiation. Ultimately, it is recommended that women over 40 have a mammogram once a year to screen for the development of cancer cells.
