Gold Crest Care Center Welcomes Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Gold Crest Care Center, a leading skilled nursing facility in New York, spreads awareness of risk reducing activities for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Bronx, NY, October 12, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Gold Crest Care Center, a leading skilled nursing facility in Bronx, New York welcomes the arrival of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and is spreading the word about risk reducing activities and preventative steps that can be taken to help fight the disease.
According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 220,000 women and 2000 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer every year. In the United States, breast cancer is the most common non-skin cancer in women and the second leading cause of cancer related death in women. Even though the rate of cancer diagnoses has increased over the years, there has been a steady decline in cases of death since the early 1990’s. Yearly, it is estimated that around $8 Billion is spent in the United States each year on breast cancer related treatment.
While it is unclear as to what particularly causes breast cancer, there are ways to reduce your risk of diagnosis. According to the Cancer Society of America, some strategies that may help reduce risk include avoiding weight gain and obesity, engaging in regular physical activity, and minimizing alcohol intake. Use of Estrogen and progestin for treatment of menopausal symptoms has been shown to increase a woman’s risk of developing the disease, along with tobacco use, environmental pollutants, and exposure to radiation. Ultimately, it is recommended that women over 40 have a mammogram once a year to screen for the development of cancer cells.
“Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a staple in the cancer community, being one of the most prevalent forms of cancer out there. Everyone here at Gold Crest has been or knows someone who was touched by the disease. We can only pray for a cure to be discovered. Until then, we applaud the steps medicine has taken over the years to reduce the amount of lives lost to this deadly disease. This month we spread awareness of risk reducing practices in the hope that fewer women and men will have to fight this disease in our lifetime,” said Mark Salamon, an Administrator at Gold Crest Care Center.
