The Grauer School to Host Screening of "Girl Rising"
The Grauer School's Great Conversations Series proudly presents a screening of the documentary "Girl Rising," preceded by a market of handcrafted goods and authentic East African cuisine. The event begins at 5:00pm on Friday, November 8th. $5 suggested donation; all proceeds go towards girls' charities.

In reflection of this event, on Friday, November 8th, The Grauer School’s community service and social justice club Girls Rising will be hosting a screening of their namesake film, Girl Rising, a documentary that shines the spotlight on the transformative power of girls’ education.
The Grauer School is bringing a global movement to educate girls and change the world home to Encinitas with this screening. Girl Rising is a groundbreaking feature film that spotlights the stories of nine unforgettable girls born into unforgiving circumstances. The film captures their dreams, their voices and their remarkable lives. It is also a movement dedicated to empowering and achieving educational equity for girls around the world.
“Equality is the future. The Girls Rising club believes that equality starts at home. The community has to understand what a girl has to go through to make it in the world,” says student leader Jada Henry, emphasizing the global aspects of these issues of equality.
This screening and consciousness-raising celebration will bring the school and the community together to raise global visibility about the importance of educating girls. The event will have authentic food by East African Cuisine, started and owned by a female Somalian refugee of the Civil War, a market of microfinanced handicraft goods, and desserts sold by Grauer School students, with proceeds going to benefit women’s charitable foundations, from 5:00-6:30 p.m. The film will begin at 6:30 p.m. in The Grauer School’s Great Hall. Girl Rising is directed by Academy Award nominee Richard E. Robbins and is narrated by Cate Blanchett, Priyanka Chopra, Selena Gomez, Anne Hathaway, Salma Hayek, Alicia Keys, Chloë Moretz, Liam Neeson, Freida Pinto, Meryl Streep, and Kerry Washington. Girl Rising’s International Day of the Girl activities are sponsored by Intel.
Girl Rising is built on a foundation of partnerships with NGOs, corporations, policy makers, and grassroots organizations — all working to change minds, lives, and policy. A portion of film ticket sales goes to support girlfocused nonprofit partner programs through the Girl Rising Fund.
