O’Donnell & Naccarato Structural Engineers Bring Home Two DVASE Awards in 2013
Philadelphia, PA, October 27, 2013 --(PR.com)-- O’Donnell & Naccarato, one of the largest and oldest structural engineering firms in Philadelphia, PA, received two 2013 Awards of Merit from the Delaware Valley Association of Structural Engineers. The awards acknowledge O’Donnell & Naccarato’s role on Penn Medicine Washington Square, a 12-story, 153,000 SF medical office building in Philadelphia, PA, and the House of Sports, a multi-level, 120,000 SF, Olympic-style, athletic training facility in Ardsley, NY.
Penn Medicine Washington Square is a steel-framed, 12-story medical office tower that was built atop an existing 7-story, post-tensioned concrete parking garage. The project required significant column transferring to accommodate the existing parking garage column grid while maintaining proper spacing for the use above. The new elevator and stair cores through the existing parking garage required intricate retrofit of the existing post-tensioned floor system. The project is now pursuing LEED certification for sustainable building practices. (Client/Architect: Ballinger - Structural Engineer: O’Donnell & Naccarato)
The House of Sports is a multi-level, 120,000 SF, Olympic-style, athletic training facility in Ardsley, NY, which houses lacrosse, basketball, baseball and football training academies. In order to make way for the new building an existing 1-story warehouse had to be demolished all while retaining a connecting 3-story office area that the owner wished to maintain and incorporate into the new facility. Features include an 80-yard grass turf field on the upper level, 4 regulation basketball courts on the second level and parking located at the lowest level. The third level offered structural challenges in several aspects. Due to the basketball courts located on the second level the building columns had to be located between the courts, creating nearly 60-foot spans. With no interior columns to be located on the fields, the roof structure is a clear span, gabled rigid frame, spanning more than 115 feet. Other spaces include an adult fitness center, a weight lifting/training area, private party rooms, and a 60-seat restaurant.
