11th Annual Lucie Awards Honor Photographers at Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall

New York hosted the 11th Annual Lucie Awards in a gala black-tie ceremony and awards program held at Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall on Oct 27. The Lucies – the world’s most esteemed photography awards ceremony honoring the greatest achievements in the field, presented awards ranging from Achievement in Fine Art and Documentary to Achievements in support categories from fashion to advertising.

Lisa Kristine, Humanitarian Award presented by Pat Mitchell, President and CEO of the Paley Center for Media, NY and former President and CEO of PBS.

Arno Rafael Minkkinen, Achievement in Fine Art presented by Sally Mann, award winning photographer and Scott Landis, Broadway producer, former CAA agent, documentary photographer and ICP teacher.

Victor Skrebneski, Achievement in Fashion presented by Carmen Dell'Orefice, fashion model and actress.

Benedikt Taschen, Visionary Award presented by Ralph Gibson, Lucie Award Honoree (2007)

John H. White, Achievement in Photojournalism presented by Hal Buell, former director of The Associated Press, photo editor

Li Zhensheng, Achievement in Documentary presented by Chen Danqing internationally recognized painter and art critic.

Susan Baraz, co-chair of the Lucie Awards, presented the Discovery of the Year Award to Carlotta Cardanachosen from among the finalists: Advertising Category: Koji Tajima, Japan, Architecture Category: Akira TAKAUE, Japan, Book Category: Patricia Dinu, Italy, Editorial Category: Massimo Barberio, Italy, Fine Art Category: Arman Zhenikeyev, Kazakhstan, Nature Category: Patricia Dinu, Italy, People Category: Carlotta Cardana, United Kingdom, Special Category: Yun Chen, China Brooks Kraft and Carlotta Cardana 
win $10,000 and $5,000 prizes, respectively.

Gail Mooney, VP of ASMP, presented Ebrahim Noroozi with a prize of $5000 and a Lucie statue for the International Photographer of the Year - Deeper Perspective Award provided by ASMP. Ebrahim Noroozi was chosen from finalists: Maysun, Ebrahim Noroozi, Polly Chandler, Souvid Datta, Gloriann Liu, Karolina Jonderko.

Moving Image Photographer of the Year Award was presented by Cat Jimenez, Executive Director, Lucie Foundation to Carson Davis Brown who was awarded $2,500, and chosen from among finalists: Keith Lanpher, Eric Kruszewski, John Huet, David Oliete, Samanta Sollima, and Carson Davis Brown. The IPA has awarded over to $200,000 in prize money over the last 11 years. Winning work was displayed in the coveted annual Best of Show exhibition at Splashlight, during Lucie Weekend.

Also conferred were awards in six Support Categories:

Picture Editor of The Year: MaryAnne Golon, Director of Photography of the Washington Post was presented by Nina Berman, photographer, member of the Noor Photo Collective and professor at Columbia University.

Photography Magazine of the Year: Aperture was presented by Wayne Lawrence, 2013 Arnold Newman Portrait Prize winning photographer.

Fashion Layout of the Year: Harper’s Bazaar for The Modern Master Piece, photographed by Hendrik Kerstens, was presented by presented by Benoit Lagarde, co-founder, principal Splashlight and James Ingram, CEO Splashlight.

Book Publisher of the Year: Taschen, for Genesis by photographer Sebastiao Salgado, was presented by Phil Toledano, photographer, artist and author of 5 books.

Photography Curator/Exhibition of the Year: Simon Baker and Shoair Mavlian for Graciela Iturbide at the Tate Modern, London, was presented by Xaviera Simmons, international multi-disciplinary artist.

Print Advertising Campaign of the Year: Publicis Singapore for “Liking Isn’t Helping” for client: Crisis Relief Singapore photographed by Sebastian Siah was presented by Benoit Lagarde, co-founder, principal Splashlight and James Ingram, CEO Splashlight.

Additionally, it was announced that The 2013 APA/Lucie Foundation Scholarship Recipient is Elizabeth Herman.

Comedian Dominick Pupa, entertained the crowd while hosting the gala award show.

The Awards capped a weekend of celebration hosted by the Lucie Foundation, the Lucie Awards’ governing body, and was kicked off by Saturday afternoon’s Lucie Foundation sponsored artist talks, followed by Saturday evening’s Best of Show exhibition and party at Splashlight in the Soho section of New York City. Susan Baraz curated the images for this exhibition from the 2013 International Photography Awards Competition, The Lucie Foundation’s sister-effort.

One,Digital Transitions, ASMP, En Foco and Splashlight. The 3 Lucie Lectures included Taryn Simon presented by Phase One and Digital Transitions, John H. White (2013 Lucie Honoree) In Conversation with Photojournalist Rick Flores (En Foco) presented by The Lucie Foundation and Enfoco, Inc. and Navigating New Media Technologies and Platforms for Professional Photographers with Richard Kelly presented by The Lucie Foundation and ASMP.
