South Nassau Awarded $6.6 Million Grant to Establish Urgent Care Center for Long Beach
$200 Million in federal funding was made available for repair, renovation and rebuilding of health care, mental health, child care and other social services facilities; unreimbursed expenses resulting from the storm.
Oceanside, NY, November 10, 2013 --(PR.com)-- South Nassau Communities Hospital was recently awarded a $6.6 million grant to establish and operate a comprehensive urgent care center on the Long Beach Medical Center campus that will provide vital healthcare services to the residents of the City of Long Beach and surrounding communities.
South Nassau was one of 464 healthcare and human service providers and other community-based organizations to be awarded a grant through the New York State Superstorm Sandy Social Services Block Grant.
A total of $200 million in federal funding was made available for repair, renovation and rebuilding of health care, mental health, child care and other social services facilities; unreimbursed expenses resulting from the storm, and for ongoing social, health and mental health services for storm impacted communities.
Richard J. Murphy, President and CEO of South Nassau Communities Hospital (SNCH), said: “I thank (New York) Governor Andrew Cuomo and U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer (NY) for the Social Services Block grant funding that will assist South Nassau in its commitment to helping meet the health care needs of its residents that were impacted by the devastation of Hurricane Sandy. In particular, this will allow South Nassau to further its commitment to the residents of Long Beach to provide urgent care services to the community. South Nassau Communities Hospital looks forward to continuing its work with the Long Beach Medical Center and the NYS Department of Health in fulfilling this goal.”
The $6.6 million grant will be used by South Nassau to cover the expenses for staff, clinical services, equipment, supplies and other costs associated with the start-up and operation of the urgent-care facility. The urgent care center will provide treatment and triage for a wide array of urgent medical conditions. Plans for the center also include the provision of ambulatory care with subspecialty backup supported through an integrated information technology system connecting the urgent care center to the main South Nassau campus in Oceanside.
In addition, laboratory and radiology imaging services will be provided on-site. Care will be provided on a walk-in basis, with no appointments required. Patients who are assessed as in need of emergency care or hospitalization will be transported to South Nassau or the hospital of their choice via on-site ambulance services.
The award of this grant will also allow for studies which will assist in the long term redevelopment of the Long Beach Medical Center campus. This includes a complete physical assessment of the facility with the assistance of commercial engineers and architects to ascertain the substantial infrastructure damage to the facility and building systems as a result of Sandy. This is vital to developing a long range master facility plan for the redevelopment of Long Beach Medical Center.
