Bioo Scientific Launches First ELISA to Screen Shrimp for Benzalkonium Chloride Contamination
Austin, TX, November 20, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Bioo Scientific has released the first commercial kit designed for the detection of benzalkonium chloride, also known as BKC, in shrimp. The new MaxSignal® Benzalkonium Chloride ELISA Test Kit can detect benzalkonium chloride in shrimp tissue to levels as low as 1 ppb. The rapid ELISA-based method allows the kit to be used with no specialized training and is designed to simplify the testing for BKC to assure the safety of shrimp entering the global seafood marketplace.
Benzalkonium chloride is a cationic surfactant commonly used in aquaculture as a disinfectant and herbicide for the prevention of infection by pathogenic yeast and control of the growth of harmful algae. Benzalkonium chloride can be toxic to mammals, and many regulatory agencies are now requiring that shrimp be tested for BKC contamination prior to human consumption.
