Historic Gatehouse of Nationally Recognized Hospital Restored and Refurbished
Sheppard Pratt Health System celebrates the restoration of its oldest structure on campus and one of two gatehouses on the National Register of Historic Places.
Baltimore, MD, November 22, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Designed and completed in the 1860’s, the Gatehouse, which has graced the Charles Street entrance to the Sheppard Pratt Health System (SPHS) campus since its inception, is recognized for its rich history and iconic stature in the mental health community. SPHS is pleased to announce the restoration of the 153-year-old Gatehouse entrance lodge with an official ceremony and reveal to be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, December 4, 2013, outside the Gatehouse’s renowned structure on the Towson campus.
The Gatehouse has undergone approximately $1.5 million in extensive restorations over the last 15 months, and has been funded by generous philanthropic gifts and pledges by the Maryland Historic Trust, France-Merrick Foundation, the Wilbur Family, the Middendorf Foundation, Inc., the Charitable Marine Society, as well as by private donors. Among its restorations include returning the exterior to its original, historic condition and renovating the interior to serve as a guesthouse for many of the Health System’s esteemed guests, lecturers, traveling applicants and consultants.
“Preserving the history of Sheppard Pratt and fulfilling the vision of founder Moses Sheppard to provide quality care to individuals with mental illness, is of the utmost importance to our Health System,” said Dr. Steven S. Sharfstein, president and chief executive officer of Sheppard Pratt. “As the first visual representation of our campus, we are elated to reveal the restored Gatehouse and are proud as it continues to welcome everyone who enters our campus.”
The restoration and refurbishing of the Gatehouse was completed under the leadership of Lewis Contractors, with KANN Partners as architects and Alexander Design Studio and Surface Logic collaborating on design and furnishing.
