Bethlehem Relief Effort Benefit Concert

Ann Arbor, MI, November 24, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Bethlehem Church presents a benefit concert to aid typhoon relief efforts in Philippines featuring Ann Arbor area musicians and conductor Arianne Abela.

A performance of Maurice Durufle’s Requiem will take place on Sunday, December 1st at 8 p.m. The performance is for the benefit of the victims Typhoon Haiyan that devastated the Philippines November 8. Proceeds will go to the multi-denominational Church World Service, one of the highest rated relief organizations in the U.S. in terms of management and percentage of dollars going directly to relief.

The event will take place in the sanctuary at Bethlehem United Church of Christ in downtown Ann Arbor, and will be led by Bethlehem Church Interim Choir Director, Arianne Abela as well as Organist Gail Jennings and approximately 100 musicians will volunteer their talents to this benefit. Arianne is a doctoral candidate in U-M’s conducting program at the school of music.

As the Philippines faced a long, grim path to recovery in the wake of Typhoon Haiyan, Arianne Abela, a native of the Philippines, is compassionately organizing a benefit concert for Philippines Typhoon relief, with proceeds going to Church World Service.

"It is hard for me to be in America and not have a direct way to help those in the Philippines. The only way I know is to bring people together through music, which is what we’re doing today. Pulling this piece together in two rehearsals and in just over two weeks is a miracle in itself. It really shows how gracious and powerful humanity is when we can work together," said Abela.

Abela has graciously organized many benefit concerts for a variety of good causes. This one is different... it is personal; it is home. "The Philippines has gone through what is the worst typhoon in the history of tropical storms. All my relatives in the Philippines were affected and thankfully not harmed by this terrible typhoon," said Abela.

According to the Philippine government’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, 3,982 deaths have been confirmed. At least 1,602 people are still missing at the time of this release.

Admission is free; a donation of $20 at the door is suggested. For more information visit bethlehem-ucc.org, call 734-665-6149 or email contact@bethlehem-ucc.org.
