Collaboration Between Different Actors is the Sole Route to Success

The Collective Leadership Institute has published its study “Shifting the way we co-create. How we can turn the challenges of sustainability into opportunities.” As sustainability has become a familiar concept and all social and environmental issues linked with it have reached the entire globalized world, sustainable solutions cannot be created in isolation. The study shows that a new leadership framework is necessary to tackle these challenges: Collective Leadership reflects a paradigm shift in how individuals find their leadership roles in the spirit of sustainable co-creation. Knowledge and methods to facilitate constructive, result-oriented dialogue and value-based collaboration are required.

The Collective Leadership Institute started the research project in Mai 2012 to explore the factors and patterns of collective action and leadership for sustainability. Practitioners from the private sector, the public sector, and civil society who are involved in sustainable change processes were interviewed, exploring two important guiding questions: First, how could these change makers build committed teams both within and across organisational boundaries and secondly, how did they manage to integrate different organisational cultures into joint initiatives and foster collaboration between diverse stakeholders. On this basis, strategies for collaboration were identified. In combination with insights and the expertise of the Collective Leadership Institute in leadership development, stakeholder engagement, and cross-sector co-operation, six competencies that enable people to lead for sustainability were defined.

One of the key aspects of Collective Leadership is to inspire other people: “We found out that human progress needs individual maturity and ethical know-how as much as effective methods to improve co-operation.” Based on the synergy of experiences and methodological competence, the study provides practical tips on how to integrate strategies into everyday work while supported by an extensive expertise and a high quality literature assessment.
