101 NGA Alums in Web.com Final Stage, 62 of Which Competed on the NGA Tour in 2013
Myrtle Beach, SC, December 15, 2013 --(PR.com)-- Hundreds of NGA Tour alumni have gone on to play at golf's highest levels and this week 101 more will be looking to join them. The Web.com Qualifying Tournament Final Stage begins Thursday December 12th and runs through Tuesday December 17th and, once again, the NGA Tour will have more past and current players competing in the event than any other developmental tour in the world. The event, nicknamed "Groundhog Day" by competitors because of it's resemblance to the Bill Murray classic movie in which the same day repeats itself over and over again, is a grueling marathon of 6 rounds of golf spread over six days.
With a hundred and one NGA Tour alums in this year's field, this will be the first year the NGA Tour has topped the 100 player mark in the event. Last year the NGA Tour had 87 players make the 165 player final stage field or 52.7% of the field. This year the field is set at 152 players so, not only did the NGA better their total number of alums in the field by 14 players, the percentage of NGA Tour players in the field jumped to an amazing 66.4% justifying the NGA's place as the number one developmental tour in golf. What's even more incredible is 62 of the NGA Tour alums in the field competed on the NGA in 2013. That's more than the next two closest developmental tours in the world combined, who had 33 and 19 each respectively. And what makes the feat even more incredible is the NGA is the only tour of the three which does not get automatic spots into Final Stage.
Past NGA Tour players like Zach Johnson, Keegan Bradley, Bubba Watson, Kevin Streelman, Tommy Gainey, Scott Stallings, Scott Piercy, Michael Thompson, and many many more have gone on to find success at golf's highest levels after having navigated successfully through Q School. This year's crop is led by 2013 NGA Tour Player of the Year Jon Curran. Curran, who played collegiately at Vanderbilt, had 3 wins on the NGA in 2013 on his way to over $100,000 in earnings. In fact, the next 3 from this year's NGA Pro Series money list made Final Stage including Justin Lower, who won this year's NGA Tour event exemption into the Reno-Tahoe Open, Blayne Barber, the 2013 NGA Tour Rookie of the Year, and Matt Hendrix, who won the NGA Tour event exemption into the Utah Championship this year. Altogether 39 2013 NGA Tour "members" made it into Final Stage reaffirming the NGA Tour as the top place for young professionals to develop their game as they prepare to compete at golf's highest levels.
