Village Medic Training Combines Wilderness First Aid Skills with Local Herbal Wisdom
Local Vermont “Village Medic Training” combines First Aid and Herbalism in an innovative community-oriented curriculum. Students will learn skills that can save lives when disaster hits.
Calais, VT, December 28, 2013 --(PR.com)-- On January 4 & 5, 2014, local Vermont wilderness company Mountainsong Expeditions will be offering a Village Medic Training in Calais, VT. This two-day intensive training will cover all the practical first aid skills that are taught in a typical in-depth Wilderness First Aid class, and also weave in local herbal wisdom that anyone can use to help their family and friends when accidents strike.
The class is a collaboration between a Wilderness First Responder and former Vermont EMT, Mary Murphy, and a community herbalist, Grace Hurley. The two women are both dedicated to building community resilience and empowering individuals through first aid education. They are very excited about the curriculum they have put together for this weekend. “This is a really unique class,” says Murphy. “Few first aid classes ever talk about herbalism, and few herbalism books & classes spend much time addressing first aid uses of herbs. It’s a very ‘Vermont’ combination and we think it’s just what people have been looking for.”
In addition to guiding wilderness trips in Vermont for eight summers, Murphy has also taught Street Medic classes across Northern New England. “The Street Medic curriculum is very much oriented towards civil protest situations and spends a lot of time addressing police violence,” Murphy explains. “We’re blessed to have very few problems with police violence in Vermont, so I kept finding my students in my Vermont classes were far more interested in herbal care information and community-based disaster response skills. That’s how the Village Medic Training idea was born.”
