Augmented Reality Art in the Palm of Your Hand
Activatar App turns every NYC Metrocard into a 3D exhibition space.
New York, NY, January 08, 2014 --(PR.com)-- New Yup augmented reality sculpture.

New Yup is an augmented reality sculpture from Michael Rees. The sculpture has two components: an image zooming into the universe and a rotating wireframe sculpture that moves more slowly through and around the moving image. Both Objects hover above the Metrocard when viewed through your phone with the custom app. The potential to carry the universe in your pocket living in a channel on top of the Metrocard affords the viewer an alternative to the repressive here-ness of the New York Subway system. This project may offer a tear in the fabric of one experience of object, site, and definition towards another potential development, a media object. By reframing this object in augmented reality it is repurposed, freed from its physical context to become something else entirely. It is not only a virtual experience but one that may "provide room for an impossible space for that in me which (is) as yet only potential." (-Antonin Artaud).
Michael Rees is an artist working in themes of figuration, language, technology, and the social to weave a sculptural mélange. He has shown his work widely including the Whitney Museum in the 1995 Biennial and again in “Bitforms” in 2001, the MARTa Museum in Germany, Art Omi, and in private galleries in New York and Los Angeles. His work is in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas City, and numerous private collections. Rees has received grants from Creative Capital, the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
ActivatAR is a project by Christopher Manzione the founder of the Virtual Public Art Project. ActivatAR uses a custom iphone app to host monthly shows on top of the New York City Metrocard and other ubiquitous public accessible imagery. It employs Augmented reality to view the physical real-world environment merged with virtual computer-generated imagery in real-time in the viewfinder of your smart phone.
