Jim Butler Hoping to Cause Upsets at 2014 Butterfly Aurora Cup
Wilson, NC, January 18, 2014 --(PR.com)-- 2-time Olympian, 3-time US National Men’s Champion and one of the best known names in US table tennis history, Jim Butler will put his experience and display at the 2014 Aurora Cup. As the only person without a Chinese training background in the top 6 seeds at the Aurora Cup, USATT Hall of Fame member Jim Butler is hoping to come from behind to take the crown.
Jim Butler has always been coached by his father Dick and looked after by his brother Scott when he traveled the world as a junior and senior player. With experience training at the well-known Angby club outside of Stockholm, Sweden, as well as additional direction from many visiting Chinese coaches, Jim rose to the top in US Table Tennis in the 1980s and 1990s. At the 1985 US Nationals at the age of 14, he beat defending champion Eric Boggan in the semifinal, and became the youngest male to ever reach the final of a US Men’s Championship. The accolades and accomplishments continued building for Jim until the mid-1990s including the 1990, 1992 and 1993 Men’s National Championship, 1992 Olympics, 1996 Olympics and a win over World Champion Jan-Ove Walnder in a Falkenberg League match in Sweden.
After taking 8.5 years off due to injury in the early 2000s, Jim Butler has been back on the US table tennis scene for about 3 years. Ranked as high as 70 in the world at his peak, he will truly be a player to watch in the Open event at the 2014 Aurora Cup.
