CAI Analyzes North Carolina Salary Projections in 2013-2014 Pay Trends Survey Results

Survey Results Show Salaries Remain Steady Across the State.

Raleigh, NC, January 22, 2014 --(PR.com)-- Bruce Clarke, president and CEO of CAI, a human resource management firm that helps organizations maximize employee engagement while minimizing employer liability, announced the results of its 2013-2014 Pay Trends Survey. The annual survey collected data from 346 unique organizations and more than 60,000 employees throughout North Carolina. Representing 82 percent of this year’s sample, the top five industries surveyed include durable goods manufacturing, professional and business services, non-durable goods manufacturing, health services and wholesale trade.

Results showed that annual salaries are expected to remain steady in 2014. A growing trend is evidenced by seventy-three percent of employers who indicated that they differentiate raises based on the performance levels of all employees.

Participating facilities reported an average base pay increase of 3.1 percent for their employees in 2013. The average base pay increase for employees for 2014 is projected to be 2.9 percent. Only 16 percent of facilities plan to give no increase for 2014, down from projections of 21 percent in the spring of 2013 and down from a high of 48 percent in 2009.

As reported in the 2013 Wage & Salary Survey released in August of 2013, average salaries for jobs in legal services and public relations have increased the most. From 2009 to 2013, salaries in these industries increased 14 percent and 10 percent respectively, compared to other industries included in the survey. Other fields seeing average pay increases between five and six percent over the past five years include health care, human resources, information technology, marketing and sales, and service-based industries.

CAI’s annual Wage & Salary Survey and Pay Trends Survey are the most comprehensive salary surveys conducted of North Carolina employers, representing the Research Triangle region, Piedmont Triad region, Southeastern North Carolina, Eastern North Carolina and Western North Carolina. Participating employers provide data on a voluntary and confidential basis. The annual Wage & Salary Survey covers company wage structure and pay practices, current year/projected base pay increases, and detailed job data for more than 340 jobs common to North Carolina employers. The annual Pay Trends Survey provides a fourth quarter update regarding employers’ salary and budget plans. Results may serve as an update to actual/projected increases reported in the Wage & Salary Survey, which is released every summer. The results of these North Carolina-based surveys can be used as a guide and tool to assist employers in making informed compensation decisions.

Quotes:
“With limited but steady salary-increase budgets of approximately 3 percent, North Carolina companies are spending money where it is most effective for recognizing its workforce,” said Molly Hegeman, CAI’s vice president of HR Services. “It is a very positive trend to see companies choosing to reward their employees based on performance.”
