The Firey Strings Company and NuAFrikan Theatre Presents Her Reflections II by Nioka Workman
Celebrate the Legacies of Madam C.J. Walker and Josephine Baker during African Heritage Month with Performances of Her Reflections II.
New York, NY, January 22, 2014 --(PR.com)-- The Firey Strings Company and NuAFrikan Theatre is proud to present Her Reflections II written and composed by Nioka Workman with performances in February 2014 at Ibeam Brooklyn and Borough of Manhattan Community College. Her Reflections II is adapted and directed by Marcus Dargan and features Alexandra Bernard, Ashley Burroughs, and The Firery String Sistas (Megan Atchley, violin; Maryam Blacksher, viola; Melissa Slocum, bass; Nioka Workman, cello).
Her Reflections II is the second installment of a colorful ongoing family arts series based on iconic women in history written and composed by Nioka Workman. The work celebrates the legacies of the successful millionaire, hair care queen Madam C.J. Walker and international singer, dancer, actress Josephine Baker. Through music, movement and storytelling, Her Reflections II retells the stories of these two women and their rise from “rags to riches” through sheer determination and talent. It is a testament to the achievements of all women of color and an inspiring tale for today's modern audience.
Performances of Her Reflections II will be held at Ibeam Brooklyn on Wednesday, February 26, 2014 at 7:30 PM, located at 168 7th Street in Brooklyn, NY and at Borough of Manhattan Community College on Thursday, February 27, 2014 at 2PM and 7PM, located at 199 Chambers Street in Manhattan, NY. General tickets are $5 for the performance at Ibeam Brooklyn and may be purchased at the door or by calling the box office at (347) 855-7281. Nioka Workman is an acoustic and electric cellist. Her performance credits include performances with Cassandra Williams, the New York Women's Ensemble, The Escape Artist, R&B collaborations with India Arie and tours with Kanye West, Jay-Z and Common at the Pepsi Smash Festival. Her most recent projects include The Nioka Trio and The Firey Strings Company, an improviser's collective providing exciting performances and workshops opportunities for string players. Most recently, awarded the 2013 American Composer’s Forum Award/Live Music for Dance to create an electronic score for Karen Charles' “Malignant”. More commissions include compositions for the Joffrey Ballet. Her work has premiered at Lincoln Center Out-of-Doors and Symphony Space.
Her Reflections II is sponsored in part by NuAFrikan Theatre NuWorks which supports the development and production of works by emerging playwrights through playwriting mentorships, staged readings, administrative, marketing, and financial support for the production of new plays.
