Research Triangle Park, NC, September 26, 2007 --(PR.com)-- Dr. William F. Greenlee, president and CEO of The Hamner Institutes for Health Sciences, an independent, nonprofit organization that offers an open, collaborative and cross-disciplinary approach to strengthen the research investment in biomedical sciences, has announced that Dr. Sheela Sharma, senior research investigator in the Preclinical Prevention Research Program at The Hamner, has been awarded $450,000 over a period of 18 months from the National Cancer Institute and the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Dr. Sharma is working with collaborators at the University of Alabama at Birmingham to identify new cancer chemoprevention agents, chemical compounds used to prevent, stop, or reverse the development of cancer. Dr. Sharma has developed relevant cell culture systems that allow for broad scale efficacy and toxicity testing, which will aid in the identification of chemoprevention agents.
“The fight against cancer is near to all of our hearts and this helps to underline the importance for new chemoprevention agents,” said Greenlee. “Dr. Sharma’s culture systems will allow her, and those along with her, collaborators to better identify cancer prevention treatments.”
