More than thirteen years ago, and after attending a plethora of doll-making courses and seminars, Erika Catellani began her journey in the creation of hand-carved dolls. Using a high-quality mountain maple wood, she formed the original and at that point a woodcarver stepped in to sculpt the design. Erika then intricately fine-tuned the facial features and designed her own arms and legs as well. At this point in the process, a bronze mold was created to permanently capture the design.
Made in Switzerland, each one of a kind (OOAK) doll has a delicately hand-painted face full of child-like expression. And each has hand-painted fingernails and toenails as well. Their bodies are soft and padded and contain a wire armature so that they can be posed. Their joints are incorporated into the doll's body for additional pose ability.
Every outfit is hand-made and oftentimes features smocking and lots of embroidery. Each doll has a mohair wig and dolls are created in 6, 8 and 10 inches in height.
Erika has won numerous awards for her incredible dolls throughout the years. Sometimes referred to as a modern-day Geppetto, she has won the coveted Eurodoll Award three years in a row. (The critera for this international doll contest is so very strict that there have been years when no Eurodoll prize has been awarded.)
