The Winner of the Stephanie C. Tardieu Award for Excellence in Pre-Medical Education is Syed F. Haider

Syed F. Haider, a junior student at the City College of the City University of New York (CCNY) was the recipient of The Stephanie C. Tardieu Award for excellence in pre-medical education on November 29th, 2012.

New York, NY, November 29, 2012 --(PR.com)-- Anoki Communications announced Syed F. Haider, a junior student at the City College of the City University of New York (CCNY), to be the recipient of The Stephanie C. Tardieu Award for excellence in pre-medical education. According to Dr. Millicent Roth, the director of the Division of Science's City College Academy for Professional Preparation (CCAPP) program, and who knows the Mr. Haider well, “Syed immigrated to the USA from Pakistan in 2008. Prior to migrating to this country and matriculating to City College, Syed did not speak English. He is now an accomplished student and researcher.”

Dr Roth added “Syed has a number of accomplishments that made him a suitable recipient for the Stephanie C. Tardieu Award. Among those, in 2012, he was also the recipient of an NIH award for his research on the Effect of Explosions on the Brain of Soldiers in Iraq, which he presented at the NIH National Conference for Research Students in San Jose, Ca.” Syed conducted this research during the summer preceding that conference at Columbia University in New York.

“Syed is also a well rounded individual who is very active on the City College campus – he mentors entering freshmen, volunteers for anything that serves the needs of our students and is currently conducting bio-medical research in one of our labs. His academic record is stellar which makes him a promising candidate for admission to medical school in America.”

At a ceremony on November 29th 2012 that highlighted research CCNY students along with their scientific poster presentation, Dr. Roth presented the 800.00 USD Stephanie C. Tardieu Award to Syed F. Haider for his outstanding academic performance as a pre-med student at CCNY. Stephanie C. Tardieu, a medical student at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, who met Syed at the event, expressed her gratitude to Dr. Roth for giving her the opportunity to be of service to the CCNY students. She further expressed: “I am glad to see efforts being made by the students even in the light of great financial difficulties. It is my hope that other capable alumni and other individuals will step forward to help those able students achieve their educational dreams.”

The Stephanie C. Tardieu Award for Excellence in Pre-medical Education is given yearly to a City College of the CUNY student who demonstrates excellence in their course work and financial needs. Interested students should contact Dr. Millicent Roth from the science division at City College.

Dr. Millicent Roth is the director of the Division of Science's City College Academy for Professional Preparation (CCAPP) program. A professor of psychology, Dr. Roth established CCAPP, which provides academic support services, including tutoring and advising, to approximately 450 science majors annually at the college.
