New Light Editions Helps to Raise $30k to Support AIDS Orphans in Uganda at Macy’s Passport 2007 Gala

Fine art photographic prints donated by New Light Editions and photographer Douglas Menuez helps to raise $30k to support Orphans in Uganda at Macy’s Passport 2007 Gala. The money will pay for a year of education for 15 children.

San Francisco, CA, October 02, 2007 --(PR.com)-- Fine art photographic prints donated by New Light Editions helped raised $30,000 at auction at the Macy’s Passport 2007 event in Santa Monica Thursday night. Fifteen people who pledged $2,000 each, enough to cover the cost of an orphan’s education for one year, received a print by photographer Douglas Menuez. In addition to donating his proceeds from the prints, Menuez also made the first pledge. The images are selections from his new book, “Transcendent Spirit: The Orphans of Uganda.” Menuez’ work and the book were underwritten by Macy’s West.

The prints depict a group of orphans in Uganda, a country wracked by AIDS, war and poverty. A number of the children comprise the dance troop named “Spirit of Uganda,” that tours the world raising money for their fellow orphans and creating awareness of their plight. Spirit of Uganda performed at the event and several of the children came on stage during the auction to encourage additional pledges. In addition to the prints, those pledging $2000 also received a copy of the book “Transcendent Spirit: The Orphans of Uganda” singed by Douglas Menuez and by Dame Elizabeth Taylor, who wrote the forward to the book.

“It’s truly humbling to see the positive energy these children generate, knowing the incredible hardships they have endured, “ said Jon Hornstein of New Light Editions. “We are thrilled to be able to provide support to such a worthy cause.”

The Macy’s Passport event is in its 25th year and has raised over $25 million to fight HIV/AIDS.. The evening began with speech by Dame Elizabeth Taylor who received Macy’s first-ever Humanitarian Award for AIDS activism. The award was presented by Macy’s West Chairman and CEO Robert Mettler.

New Light Editions offers a collectable box set of 15 signed, limited edition prints from Menuez’ Transcendent Spirit: The Orphans of Uganda project. A portion of the proceeds from the sales of the box sets and individual prints goes to Empower African Children, a non-profit that provides major support to the orphans in Uganda. Innova Digital Arts and Canon have provided major support in the creation of these limited edition prints.
