Chicago Artist Overcomes the Streets of Chiraq Singer Kam Speaks on Overcoming the Stereotypes of the South Side

Chicago, IL, March 07, 2014 --(PR.com)-- Chicago’s South Side is often associated with gangs, violence and crime, so much so people often overlook the good that comes from that part of the city. The South Side of Chicago has notoriously produced a number of talented artists, including the break out star, Kam. Kam is a Chicago native, born and raised on Chicago’s South Side. With all the temptations and negative paths to go down, Kam knew at a young age that singing was her passion and an outlet for her to overcome the streets of her neighborhood. Kam inherited her mother’s gift for singing and began to harness and embrace her talents at the young age of three.

Growing up Kam faced many obstacles and negative temptations, but she stayed focused on her music and didn’t let outside influences draw her astray from her dream of making it as an artist. While friends and her peers were out on the streets, Kam joined a number of youth choirs and continued to practice and grow as an artist. Not only was music an outlet for her, but also the people she encountered on her path to stardom were huge influences and mentors. Choir instructors and teachers helped Kam keep her goals in perspective and gave her opportunities to get out of the South Side. These opportunities allowed her to grow as not only a vocalist, but as a performer and musician. Her grammar school choir teacher, Mr. Elmore, pushed Kam to audition for the All City Youth Choir at Whitney Young, where she excelled. After leaving Whitney Young, Kam kept pushing towards her dream and enrolled in the Merit School of Music where she practiced musical theater, vocal performance and dance under the direction of Ms. Melba Wright, who became the greatest mentor and influencer in Kam’s music career.

Although Kam never lost focus on her dream, she wasn’t always able to avoid troubles and the temptations of her neighborhood. Even when she deviated from her path, she always returned knowing her ultimate goal was to become the talented and successful artist she is today. She has used her life experiences in her music and to inspire her to be the best version of herself. Her upbringing inspired her to put a positive spin on the negative in her life. In her hit single “Killa Kam” she took the word ‘Killa’ and made it a positive phrase, using it to tell the story of how she’s killing her music and her dreams. Kam has been greatly influenced by the success of other Chicago artists and their abilities to overcome the hardships they faced in the city.

“Seeing the other talented artists that have overcome the streets of Chicago has deeply inspired me. Their music and success has driven me to use my own life experiences to create music that will speak to others and will hopefully motivate others to choose a higher path than just the streets,” Kam said.

All of Kam’s hard work and dedication has paid off with the success of her single “Killa Kam”. She was named iHeartRadios “Artist to watch” for three consecutive months, from September to November. Kam is the first artist to receive the title that many times. She was also featured on BET’s “106 & Park” New Joint of the Day and then reached number 4 on the shows countdown. She also had a guest spot and interview during their Young Stars Week. In addition to all of her television and radio success, Kam also completed BET’s “Music Matters ‘Rebellious Soul’ Tour” with K.Michelle. She will also be representing Zuma Entertainment by performing a showcase at the 2014 South By South West. This is just the beginning for Kam, she is currently working on her upcoming album and has a lot more performances and surprises planned for 2014.
