Think about stockings, graffiti chicks, origami, crumpled stationeries, scented tissues, lip gloss and sweet scented girl rooms full of whimsy, kink and charm. Each work carries a sincere expression of self, as rooted within the aesthetic of Bay Area femmes. The double punch toy store at northbeach features the works by Tink (Jessica Whiteside), Leah Brawley, Nathalie Roland, Kelly Tunstall and Fawn Gehweiler. The show is curated by Lian Ladia
Leah's work consists mostly of tiny self-portraits, drawings and sculptures that reflects the sweet and mod sensibilities reminiscent to Japanese or French story books. Her work serves as a visual diary of thoughts and desires.
Tink/ Jessica Whiteside's education is in illustration, but lately she's been creating paintings so her works evoke realism, fashion and eros in the world of paint and colors, swirled in a background of dropping hearts.
Fawn, who has exhibited with Miss Van and Mike Giant, evokes wide eyed innocence in dark fairy tales. Face magazine has described her work as "the visual equivalent of candyfloss peppered with broken glass, delicious yet dangerous".
Nathalie is a printmaker and creates characters out of her dreams, nightmares and surrounding music. Her work is strikingly referenced to independent music as her prints are reproduced through wood cuts creating authentic and DIY aesthetics. She has created posters for weezer, mogg, hijack the disco and scrabbel.
Kelly renders stylized, leggy, female figures, and their pets, prey, powers, dreams and whims in acrylic and ink on panel or canvas. Her calligraphic drawing method evokes delicate feminine figures that portrays a world of chic.
The 2nd floor will be transformed to a pink and grey mod world that characterizes glowing female characters that are Indy, chic, wide-eyed, curious, childlike, and utterly precious. The exciting show at the double punch toy store will be held from Oct 20-Nov 16, 2007 with an opening night at Oct 20, 2007 at 7:30pm.
