Slow Burn Theatre’s Production of “Chess” Musical Debuts While Political Unrest in Crimea Continues
Boca Raton, FL, March 19, 2014 --(PR.com)-- As political tensions between the United States and Russia continue to strain amidst the turmoil in Crimea, Slow Burn Theatre’s presentation of the musical “Chess” seems more relevant than ever.
Chess is a musical with lyrics by Tim Rice (Evita, Aladdin, The Lion King) and music by Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, formerly of ABBA. The story involves a romantic triangle between gamemasters competing in a world chess championship, and a woman who manages one and falls in love with the other. Although the protagonists were not intended to represent any specific individuals, the characters’ personalities are loosely based on those of Victor Korchnoi and Bobby Fischer. The Merano championship in the musical is based on the similar oddities which occurred during the 1978 World Championship between Korchnoi and Anatoly Karpov.
Slow Burn Theatre of Boca Raton, which garnered 10 Carbonell nominations for its recent show, next to normal, is known for producing contemporary, daring musicals using impressive local talent and live music to put on powerful shows that audiences love. The Miami Herald’s Christine Dolen wrote of their recent performance of “next to normal,” “Utilizing local actors, musicians and designers, director Patrick Fitzwater easily proves a point he makes at the top of the show: The talent here impressively meets the challenges of this demanding musical.”
Slow Burn Theatre will be performing “Chess” at the West Boca Performing Arts Theater from March 21st until April 5th, then the show transitions to the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center April 10th through April 13th. Don’t miss the opportunity to see one of South Florida’s premier performing arts groups!.
