The Hamner Institutes for Health Sciences Receives Grant for Diabetes Research
Research Triangle Park, NC, October 05, 2007 --(PR.com)-- Dr. William F. Greenlee, president and CEO of The Hamner Institutes for Health Sciences, has announced that Dr. Jingbo Pi, research investigator in the Division of Translational Biology at The Hamner, has been awarded $415,000 over a three-year period from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This grant will allow Dr. Pi to study the roles of reactive oxygen species as putative signals that mediate glucose-stimulated insulin secretion in pancreatic beta-cells. This study will improve our understanding on the mechanisms of insulin secretion and help to develop new strategies for diabetes treatment.
“Understanding cell signaling pathways and the conditions that affect them is critical in the development of new therapies,” said Greenlee. “This funding will allow for research of cell signaling pathways within the pancreas, an organ that has a major impact on human health and is linked to many diseases.”
