GoRail Supports New Operation Lifesaver Pedestrian and Driver Safety Campaign
“See Tracks? Think Train!” Campaign Takes Aim at Risky Behavior Around Railroad Tracks
Alexandria, VA, April 10, 2014 --(PR.com)-- GoRail today announced its support of the Operation Lifesaver, Inc. “See Tracks? Think Train!” campaign aimed at educating the public about safe pedestrian and driver behavior around railroad tracks. According to preliminary Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) statistics, 908 pedestrians were injured or killed while walking on or near railroad tracks in 2013, up nearly 8 percent from 2012.
“Freight railroads have a true culture of safety every day in the communities they serve, including working with public safety advocate organizations like Operation Lifesaver,” said GoRail President Russell McGurk. “Safety education is vital, and hopefully this campaign will help people realize it’s never a good idea to take a shortcut on railroad tracks, or try to beat a train. If you see tracks, you should always think a train is coming.”
According to the FRA, trespassing resulted in nearly 2,600 deaths and injuries across the nation over the last three years, and casualties increased every year between 2011 and 2013. Drivers trying to beat a train, or people trespassing on railroad tracks account for 95 percent of all rail-related deaths. Even when emergency brakes are applied, a typical freight train can take more than a mile to stop – the distance of 18 football fields. Additionally, more than 50 percent of people injured or killed while trespassing on railroad tracks have drugs or alcohol in their system.
“The safety of our community and its residents is our top priority,” said Illinois State Representative Rich Brauer (R-Petersburg). “I applaud Operation Lifesaver's efforts and encourage everyone to pay close attention to their message.”
