San Francisco, CA, May 02, 2014 --(PR.com)-- Desmond D’Sa, Coordinator of South Africa’s SDCEA (South Durban Community Environmental Alliance), has won the 2014 Goldman Environmental Prize. Desmond was nominated for The Goldman Prize, the world’s largest prize honoring grassroots environmentalists, as part of the deep commitment that the San Francisco-based international development organization IDEX has made to standing in solidarity with its grassroots partners.
Mr. D’Sa, who has worked with the SDCEA since 1996, was chosen as one of the recipients, according to the selection committee, because he “rallied south Durban’s diverse and disenfranchised communities to successfully shut down a toxic waste dump that exposed nearby residents to dangerous chemicals and violated their constitutionally protected right to a safe and clean environment.”
D’Sa has campaigned tirelessly for a community free from the degradation of petrochemical refineries, heavy industry and other corporate polluters. It is in recognition of the potential of grassroots community activism to effect real and lasting change that IDEX has partnered with the SDCEA since 2010.
D’Sa has now turned his sights on fighting the expansion of Durban’s port, a $25 billion project that stands to displace thousands of people without compensation and exacerbate problems such as waste management, pollution, and traffic. Visit IDEX’s website to learn more about the SDCEA and how you can join the fight against this Port expansion by signing onto a petition.
