Organisations involved in the manufacture of all types of packaging and packaging materials can show their commitment to producing a safe, functional and legal product by obtaining certification to this standard.
The GFSI (Global Food Safety Initiative) has worked closely with food industry experts to clearly define the requirements that shall be in place to provide food safety assurance in specific sectors of the food industry and for organisations providing services to the food industry. Although the principles are the same, these requirements differ from sector to sector of the food supply chain.
Packaging is considered to be one of the most important processes to maintain quality of the product during storage, transportation and distribution as well as contribute to extending the shelf life and maintaining its original quality and safety attributes, achieving preservation and ensuring that the product is delivered safe until consumption. Packaging also has secondary functions, that of selling and sales promotion, a means of communicating information such as nutritional, safety, storage, processing regulatory and others.
