Now Exposed: X-Ray Tech Takes Shot at Fiction

Author publishes Medical Thriller taking place in a Radiology Department.

Buffalo, NY, October 13, 2007 --(PR.com)-- Artist and x-ray technologist T. B. Kerr forces us to look at how we really treat our patients and coworkers with his 184 page medical thriller, Art & Artifact. Attitudes toward cultural diversity, professionalism and patient care in a changing medical landscape fuel his book until it finally boils over.

Mr. Kerr draws from his fourteen years’ experience in Radiology departments as well as a previous career as a graphic designer to colorfully portray “All Saints Hospital” and its staff. His main character, Tesfaye Ababa, is an Ethiopian-American x-ray technologist struggling to fit in. When Tesfaye reports another technologist’s mistreatment of patients, Tesfaye is threatened by a department bully. Kerr states: “I’ve seen so many incidents over the years that I knew it was time to put down the most difficult, gut-wrenching ones and then make something good of it. Like lemonade from lemons.”

Kerr’s hospital experiences bring a contemporary authenticity to Art & Artifact, enjoyed by the dozens of readers he found at Mercy Hospital and at Trocaire College where he is a Radiologic Technology clinical instructor. Carol Weber, another teacher at Trocaire, plans to make the book required reading for her Patient Care class this year. She sees as an exciting way to approach the topic of ethics for the health care worker. Some of that excitement is evident in this excerpt:

“At three forty-five p.m., the ER secretary heard the first call on the ambulance radio. An explosion in the filled auditorium of Sinclair College, practically adjacent to All Saints, had knocked out a wall. When it happened, the secretary and others in the nurses’ station felt the percussion and heard the blast. There could be dozens of casualties. Sirens whined and a cloud of gray smoke drifted skyward…”

As the title Art & Artifact implies, the story pulls together characters from other walks of life including celebrities and a famous artist who takes the reader away from the hospital and back to it for its hectic climax.
