RSC Architects Designed New Team Walker Learning Center in Jersey City
Hackensack, NJ, May 24, 2014 --(PR.com)-- On Saturday, May 17 at 11 a.m., Jersey City, NJ native Jerry Walker and the Team Walker foundation held a ribbon cutting ceremony to officially open the Team Walker Learning Center, located at the corner of Communipaw Ave. and Halladay St. on the site of a former vacant lot in Jersey City. Designed by RSC Architects, the new three-story, 7,200 square-foot facility serves as a community center that supports communication and instills the value of education for students in grades four through 10.
Distinguished guests included Jersey City Mayor Steven M. Fulop, State Senator Sandra Cunningham, and Associate Dean Robin Cunningham from Seton Hall University, as well as board members, students, and parents.
“The Team Walker Learning Center is a dream come true for my family,” said Walker. “It is not only going to be a landmark in our neighborhood, but it has been designed to take care of the needs of the community. The building has a great community room on the first floor and many multi-purpose classroom areas for our after-school program. I cannot thank everyone enough for making this happen for the kids of Jersey City.”
The first story of the building is comprised of light earth-tone bricks with horizontal darker brick accents, while the second and third stories showcase darker bricks with light brick accents. New concrete curbs and sidewalks are designed with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant curb ramps. Trees were planted along the street, and within the enclosed small parking area in the rear of the building.
The building consists of a large multiple purpose room, seven small group meeting spaces, and other accessory spaces. To match the Team Walker Learning Center signage and Walker’s alma mater Seton Hall University, select walls inside were painted blue, and blue tiles were patterned within the white and gray checkered floor.
While it is not a school, the center focuses on education. The intent of the center is to create an after-school space for students to obtain help with homework and tutoring services. The structured academic and recreational environment will follow by the three Ds: dedication, determination, and discipline. During summer recess, the facility will also provide summer camp programs and an outlet for students to foster skills and mature academically.
About Team Walker (www.teamwalker.org)
Founded in 1996 by Jersey City natives and brothers Jerry and Jasper Walker, Team Walker is a non-profit organization that provides community support to youth in Jersey City. The brothers sought to create a place that provides the same after school program that they enjoyed as children, and thus the Team Walker Learning Center was born. The organization’s goal with this project was to create a facility that provides safe and constructive alternatives to the negative influences that plague the youth.
