TECH Outreach Hunts for Women to Empower
TECH Outreach faces challenges in recruiting eligible women for its Credit & Savings Scheme that it obtained a grant from Khazanah Nasional.
Petaling Jaya, Malaysia, June 05, 2014 --(PR.com)-- The President of TECH Outreach, based in Malaysia, Dr. Selvamalar Ayadurai, said today that TECH Outreach has been actively pursuing leads to recruit eligible women to receive savings and credit loans to start or re-capitalise a business.
Dr. Malar said that TECH was given a grant for MYR 400,000 from Khazanah Nasional to help poor women sustain their families within the Klang Valley for the period June 2014 to May 2015. This grant is to help 150 women during the period.
The goal is to recruit 75 women by 30 June 2014. That would be the first phase of this project.
The objective is to select women from within a geographically proximate community, so that the benefits of this project will spill over to the community as a whole. From past experience, TECH has observed that assisting women from disparate locations has limited benefits. This was also the experience of Prof. Mohammad Yunus from Bangladesh of Grameen Bank fame.
TECH has partnered with several other NGOs and religious communities to channel potentially eligible women to be considered for the project. To be eligible there are several criteria that the women have to fulfill and this includes current household earning and household contents.
The selection process is a two stage system. During Stage 1, the women are interviewed by TECH volunteers. Those who are shortlisted will then be subject to a house visit by the volunteers to verify details obtained during the interview.
The challenge TECH is currently facing is that it needs more partners to channel more women for this Project as many of the women proposed for this project don’t meet the qualifying criteria.
The second challenge is that there are insufficient volunteers to conduct the interviews and home visits.
Therefore, Dr. Malar appeals for more organisations that are involved in social outreach to partner with TECH to assist their women beneficiaries.
Secondly, Dr. Malar is also appealing for volunteers to assist TECH in the selection process.
Non-profit organisations and NGOs as well as individuals interested to get involved are encouraged to contact the Project Coordinator, Ms. Poon at 6012-2126293 or email her at mymypoon@yahoo.com.
