Olympic Swimmers Make a Splash at The Gateway Family YMCA – Rahway Branch
USA Swimming Foundation and Phillips 66 Partner to Bring Olympic Swimmers to the YMCA to Discuss Water Safety
Rahway, NJ, June 11, 2014 --(PR.com)-- The Gateway Family YMCA – Rahway Branch hosted the USA Swimming Foundation’s Make a Splash tour, sponsored by the Phillips 66 Bayway Refinery. Designed to educate the community on swimming safety, the tour brought Olympic Gold Medalists Anthony Ervin and Rowdy Gaines together with the Rahway community.
In, “An opportunity of a lifetime,” as described by a parent, children in The Gateway Family YMCA – Rahway Branch’s swimming lessons were provided with an opportunity to swim with the Olympians and given a small group aquatic safety lesson. Throughout the evening activities were provided to teach children about swimming safety, while their parents, civic leaders and members of the community discussed the importance of learning to swim and water safety precautions throughout the community.
“The Make a Splash tour is a great opportunity to highlight the importance of learning to swim,” stated Krystal R. Canady, Chief Executive Officer of The Gateway Family YMCA, “The opportunity to meet the Olympic Gold Medalists face to face is one that many of our young swimmers will remember for the rest of their lives.” Phillips 66 and the USA Swimming Foundation partnered together to bring the Make a Splash tour to The Gateway Family YMCA. “The children enjoyed themselves and learned some important lessons about being safe near the water,” added Melynda A. Mileski, Executive Vice President/Chief Operating Officer of The Gateway Family YMCA.
The Y includes safety skills in all swimming lessons, and this collaboration was an extension of The Gateway Family YMCA’s commitment to creating a safe environment for local youth. “Rahway is a community surrounded by water, much like many in New Jersey,” stated Gerry Gessie, Branch Executive Director of The Gateway Family YMCA – Rahway Branch, “It’s important for children be exposed to safety discussions and learn what to do in case of an emergency.” The Make a Splash tour brought excitement to a serious topic by including the children in fun activities and provided them with the opportunity to meet the Olympians.
