The weather phenomenon termed ‘polar vortex’ caught energy retail customers by storm, and sent electricity prices skyrocketing in many parts of the country. Polar vortex is considered an arctic cyclone of extremely cold air that spins counterclockwise around the north and south poles. As a result, many utilities experienced higher costs of service and announced rate hikes of 8% to 25% across the United States.
With the arrival of summer, customers are concerned that they will be hit with a ‘solar vortex’, due to high heat temperatures. Still recovering from winter losses, customers are looking for ways to save money on energy costs.
“Last winter we saw a run up in prices when the jet stream dipped and brought record cold from the Arctic for over two months,” said Joseph Casey, Chief Operating Officer for U.S. Gas & Electric, a Florida-based marketer of electricity and natural gas. “We could see the same jump in prices if air conditioning demand kicks in with record heat.”
