Student Resource Center Names Director, Hires Staff, Sets New Hours
Gateway ready to serve students and downtown residents
Raleigh, NC, October 21, 2007 --(PR.com)-- Gateway, a free and confidential sexual health and consulting services resource center, has officially opened its facility on Hillsborough Street in Raleigh. The new location has also added three staff members to run the facility, work with the community, and follow through with client needs.
Connie Barnes has been named Interim Director of Gateway’s Raleigh location. Barnes has an undergraduate degree from James Madison University and received a master’s degree in education, with a focus in psychology, from Northern Arizona University. Before moving to NC, she was the Homebound Coordinator for the Scottsdale Unified School District. As director of Gateway, she will run the daily schedule and activities in addition to community outreach and recruitment.
Jennifer Tousey will serve as the Gateway Student Outreach Coordinator. She has a BA in History from Winthrop University and has previously worked with Farm Bureau Insurance as a trainer. In addition to being a trained public speaker, Tousey has also received her certification as a HIV test counselor. In her new position with Gateway, she will oversee volunteers, coordinate student groups and head up on-campus activities.
Kelly Spiers, RN has been hired as a Registered Nurse for Gateway. Originally from Virginia, Spiers attended James Madison University and has been a registered nurse for the past three years. She is coming to Gateway after working as a Labor and Delivery nurse at Duke University Hospital.
“Currently, Gateway will be open Tuesdays – Thursdays from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm,” stated Barnes. “Gateway will focus on health education, pregnancy consulting, and sexual health discussion groups. Now that we have our Registered Nurse on site, our facilities are ready to begin serving clients.”
Area college students and young adults will be able to attend seminars, discussion sessions and one-on-one consultations with trained staff. In addition to being located near the five college campuses in Raleigh, Gateway is also located on the Capital Area Transit (CAT) bus line #4 for those Raleigh residents and students who may require transportation to the new facility.
