eta College Welcomes Velokhaya Life Cycling Academy to Its Accredited Coaching and Administration Skills Programme for Township Youth
eta College, through its skills development division, has joined forces with Velokhaya Life Cycling Academy, with funding provided by the sport SETA (CATHESSETA) to host a 5 month skills programme, centered around coaching and administration skills for cycling.
Cape Town, South Africa, August 01, 2014 --(PR.com)-- The course will be delivered at the eta College Campus in Rondebosch and will include both academic and practical training in sports coaching and event planning, specifically for youth from disadvantaged communities.
The program is a beneficiary of the high-profile Mzansi Cycle Tour, SA’s premier road cycling event. As title sponsor, CATHSSETA has made funding available for the training of their cycling coaches and administrators of the future. The candidates have been sourced and will be mentored by Velokhaya Life Cycling Academy, a not-for-profit organisation based in Khayelitsha, South Africa. Velokhaya uses cycling-based programmes to involve township youth in a positive, after-school activity. Their aim is to give children from disadvantaged communities the skills and opportunities they need to make a success of their lives. Mthunzi Mdwaba, founder of Velokhaya says that their aim is “to try and grow champions on and off the bike.”
“We are extremely excited to branch out into cycling education for the first time, in support of the Velokhaya program, as well as participating in a sport supported by CATHSSETA,” says Paul Laemmle, Manager at eta Special Projects. As one of the fastest growing sports in SA, It’s a great initiative for corporates to get involved with in terms of sponsorship and we have a variety of opportunities available, including kit sponsorship and more.
eta Special Projects help support sport and fitness businesses and organisations deliver successful learnership projects for the continued training of their staff. Funding is often secured from CATHSSETA and corporates and these learnerships and skills programmes are offered annually.
CATHSSETA’s involvement in the sport of cycling includes the inaugural Mzansi Tour which took place last year, from 17 to 21 April, 2013. The aim of this tour, as well as the aim for the new Coaching and Administration Skills Programme, according to CATHSSETA CEO Mike Tsotetsi, is to “promote transformation in the cycling fraternity and introduce professional cycling to young black aspiring cyclists.”
