Yvonne Ulmer of Coaching by Design Facilitates Cultural Diversity and Mediation Workshop for Local Lawyers
St. Petersburg, FL, August 02, 2014 --(PR.com)-- Certified Professional Coach Yvonne Ulmer of Coaching by Design facilitated a Cultural Diversity and Mediation Workshop as part of a continuing mediation education program for Charles N. Castagna Mediation, Inc.
Attendees were local attorneys and judges certified as mediators, professionals trained to help parties to reach an agreement outside of a courtroom. Mediation is a method of alternative dispute resolution that is growing in popularity as companies, individuals and even the courts look for ways to save money.
Yvonne guided the mediators through thought provoking discussions covering mutual respect and their initial reactions to a variety of potentially shocking images. Photographs portraying various genders, ethnicities, religions, and sexual orientations as well as those depicting violence, different lifestyles, polarizing political and social views, had the participants discovering their own potential biases and learning from their neighbors.
Based on the lively discussion, Yvonne used their reactions to illustrate how various prejudices could affect how the mediators approach their clients, and conversely, how their clients may view them.
“One attendee recalled how he often makes a joke about his suit when approaching a dressed down client to make them feel more comfortable,” said Ulmer. “He laughs and says that he’d much rather be in shorts and flip flops too. As mediators, it is important that they can relate to their clients and communicate as peers.”
Yvonne was recently approved by the Supreme Court of Florida as a subject matter specialist for circuit mediation programs in accordance with Section 2.04(c) of the Mediation Training Standards and Procedures.
“Yvonne’s program was thoughtful, engaging, relevant to, and highly evaluated by those in attendance,” said Charles Castagna. “I am looking forward to her participation in future programs.”
