Dimplex Renewables Answers the IESO’s Call for Energy Storage Technology in Ontario
Cambridge, Canada, August 11, 2014 --(PR.com)-- Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) recently announced Dimplex North America as one of five companies awarded energy storage projects for the province. The projects are part of a larger mandate to provide 50 megawatts to Ontario by the end of 2014 and include the testing of multiple technologies such as the thermal energy storage technology currently in use worldwide by Dimplex.
“Thermal energy storage is not a side business but core to the Glen Dimplex Group,” says Ron Kurtz, Director of Sustainable Renewable Energy for Dimplex. “This multi-million dollar investment in fast-acting thermal energy storage systems is a testament to our belief in the future ability of demand dispatch to meet the needs of integrating intermittent renewable generation into the electric grid.”
The awarded project, led by Dimplex in partnership with Providence, Rhode Island smart grid company VCharge, will involve building a 0.75MW thermal energy storage asset within a social housing apartment complex in order to provide fast regulation and grid balancing services while lowering energy bills for the housing authority. “We will be retrofitting direct-acting electric baseboard heaters in each suite’s living room with Dimplex’s German-made VFMQ storage heaters,” explains Kurtz. “This use of energy storage for direct end-use applications is extremely valuable as it eliminates the typical distribution loses and battery conversion loses caused when sending electricity back into the grid.”
In addition to the IESO’s interest in energy storage, Dimplex is running grid-tied thermal energy storage pilots around the world (United Kingdom, Germany, Ireland and New Brunswick, Canada), evaluating the dynamic dispatch benefits of thermal energy storage to provide balancing services. Further details on this and other Dimplex Renewables projects will publish this fall via the Dimplex website: www.dimplex.com.
