"Mile High, Red Hot" by García Sinclair + Nafis White at Yellow Peril

"Mile High, Red Hot" features an interactive Confiserie layered with exciting new works that draw viewers into the visceral space while transporting them to emotional landscapes through the lens of memory.

Providence, RI, September 03, 2014 --(PR.com)-- Yellow Peril Gallery is pleased to present “Mile High, Red Hot,” a mixed media dual exhibition by García Sinclair and Nafis White, featuring an interactive Confiserie layered with exciting new works that draw viewers into the visceral space while transporting them to emotional landscapes through the lens of memory. “Mile High, Red Hot” opens Thursday, October 9, 2014; the opening reception is Saturday, October 11 from 6PM – 9PM.

Through a select grouping of sculptural works, drawings, prints, video and audio, the participatory Confiserie installation, “Mile High, Red Hot” will explore themes of desire, consumption, the ephemeral, and the individual vs. collective memory. “We aspire to immerse the audience in a multisensory experience that will spread the seeds of curiosity, longing and wonderment,” says White.

The Confiserie at the center of “Mile High, Red Hot” will guide the discourse within the larger context of the entire body of work. It will be comprised of numerous apothecary jars and tiers of glass canisters brimming with candies of all types from around the world, across many decades and traditions. Audiences are encouraged to literally eat their way through the exhibition.

“We are interested in how viewers will engage with the body of work as well as with each other within the installation,” notes Sinclair. “This exhibit will serve both simple and yet rich ideas and experiences, encompassing the social, visual and evocative nature of the work.”

The opening reception for “Mile High, Red Hot” is Saturday, October 11, from 6PM – 9PM. The exhibition will be on display until Sunday, November 16, 2014. This is the first dual exhibition for Sinclair and White at Yellow Peril Gallery. Both artists previously had work presented by Yellow Peril at Cutlog NY 2014, a contemporary art fair focusing on avant-garde and breakthrough artists during Frieze Week in New York. A portion of the proceeds from “Mile High, Red Hot” sales will be donated to the Children’s Defense Fund, a non-profit child advocacy organization founded by Marian Wright Edelman that has worked relentlessly for more than 40 years to ensure a level playing field for all children.

About García Sinclair and Nafis White
Since meeting in San Francisco in 2002, visual artists García and Nafis have been creating notable works both individually and collaboratively. Both were accepted into the Rhode Island School of Design’s BFA Sculpture program in 2012, and have been without fail awarded numerous scholarships for academic excellence, along with recently being awarded the prestigious MLK Fellowship from RISD. They have won the RISD Museum Sitings competition for two years in a row, which provides funding for site-specific interventions and installations proposed for and commissioned by the museum. In addition to making, they have curated two distinct exhibitions in Providence, one in 2013 at AS220’s Project Space titled “It Doesn’t Show Signs of Stopping,” and one in 2014 at RISD’s Exposé Gallery titled “The Beloved Community.”

Nafis and García’s studio practice is exceptionally diverse in medium and structure utilizing everything around them, creating works that are both 2 and 3 dimensional, from installation to experimentation with sound, video and photography. Leveraging their imagination, intuition and agency they are able to create phenomenological and multilayered works of art. Themes that often inform their discipline include identity, conditions and boundaries, history, memory, process, landscape and ephemera.
