Wakeup Calls: mHealth Bridging Cross-Border Divides at World Medical Tourism & Global Healthcare Congress
Billion-dollar technology industry showcased at "Medical Silk Road" mobile health conference, Sept. 20-24, 2014, in Washington, D.C.
Washington, DC, September 11, 2014 --(PR.com)-- Mobile health, technology’s billion-dollar challenge to bridge the gap between healthcare providers and patients by making distances irrelevant and access unprecedented, will bring together industry experts and entrepreneurs -- from researchers and developers to policymakers and physicians – for discussions aimed at extending services, improving efficiency and reducing costs during the 7th World Medical Tourism & Global Healthcare Congress, Sept. 20-24, 2014, in Washington, D.C., the Medical Tourism Association® announced today.
“Medical Silk Road,” an mHealth conference organized through a partnership between the Medical Tourism Association® and the Borderless Healthcare Group, will introduce the latest healthcare technologies including mHealth apps, smart home automation, and healthcare games among others during a series of talks, networking and recommendation sessions with stakeholders from government, healthcare, media, telecommunications, and software development at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center. "The impact of portability of data, borderless nature of healthcare services on the matured medical travel industry can create a mega smart health network globally," said Dr. Wei Siang Yu, chairman and founder of Borderless Healthcare Group which is the global knowledge leader in the healthcare technology, media and telecommunication space.
According to Dr. Wei, because millions of medical travelers are moving from one country to another for healthcare services each year, the development of smart health networks will allow more integrated borderless medical services, making “big data” from medical travel a very valuable tool toward global epidemiology trends. Many doctors are also soon expected to adopt Borderless Clinic Apps and other internet processes as part of their patient/medical traveler management and communication tools in this new era of medical tourism 3.0.
Since the start of last year, more than $750 million in venture capital has been invested in companies that can do everything from transform a smartphone into a blood pressure gauge or photograph medical-quality images of the inner ear. In Asia, a market famous for innovative and trend-setting technologies that often find years to find their way to the West, the mHealth market is expected to reach $7 billion by 2017.
“Devices that enable people to monitor and manage health are catching on,” said Renée-Marie Stephano, President of the Medical Tourism Association®. “As more of these technologies find their place in the hands of both consumers and providers to facilitate long-distance relationships and accelerate medical tourism opportunities, vendors will be challenged to offer solutions that are not only sensitive to price and security, but the time required to gain acceptance as well.”
Coinciding with the rollout of public healthcare systems, growing consumer wealth and lifestyle changes, healthcare spending among Asian nations is expected to grow at a rate of 7.1 percent from 2013-2017. As measuring guide, China, is predicted to triple healthcare expenditures to US$1 trillion annually by 2020 driven, in part, by an aging population, and government efforts to broaden insurance coverage and build 31,000 new hospitals in the coming decade.
The World Medical Tourism & Global Healthcare Congress (www.medicaltourismcongress.com/) attracts some 3,000 key stakeholders – hospital administrators, doctors and clinicians, government policy makers, employers, medical tourism facilitators, insurance executives and hospitality and travel interests -- from across the globe to share their experiences in an effort to identify and solve issues that have significant bearing on the industry.
