A City Without Windows – Nineteen Year Old Candidate Wants to Make This "Vision" Happen with Linux

The youngest candidate in Muscatine's Mayoral Race wants to see more open source technology used "to save money and improve efficiency" throughout the city.

Muscatine, IA, October 31, 2007 --(PR.com)-- Everyone has used Microsoft Windows at some point, and many use it daily. But could you imagine a world without it? Or at least, a city.

That's what Mayoral candidate Ryan Kopf, 19, of Muscatine wants to see happen. Kopf, who runs a campaign focused on bringing more open source software into the city government, wants to see more Linux and other open source operating systems being used.

“Thousands of dollars go to Microsoft each year, and we're tired of it,” Kopf said.

Being the youngest candidate can be a good indicator of why Kopf has so much of an interest in new technology in his city. With his first website designed in sixth grade, he has been avidly into computer science ever since.

“I had a Java complier install on a computer in the computer lab, and I was there every day,” Kopf claimed.

No other candidate in the local election is so into technology, and no other candidate has a website either. Ryan's website (http://www.ryankopf.com) looks pretty impressive, modeled off of more top-tier websites such as those of Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton.

When asked about Kopf's other plans, one of his organizers who only goes by her video game character name, 'SilentArrow', said, “There are so many things we plan to do. Not only will we use new technology, but we're going to make a new place for young people to hang out.”

Linux, a completely free operating system, rivals Microsoft's expensive Windows, which costs nearly $100 at retail price. For each computer bought with Windows on it, roughly $50-$60 goes directly to Microsoft just for the operating system.

“Open source alternatives could save us so much money,” Kopf explained.
