New Charities to Take Part in Santa to the Sea’s Charity Challenge
Race participants can join in and help raise funds for one of five local charities.
Oxnard, CA, October 02, 2014 --(PR.com)-- Santa to the Sea announces the five charities that are taking part in this year’s Santa to the Sea Charity Challenge: FOODShare, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme, The Autism Society of Ventura County, Future Leaders of America, Ventura County and Inlakech Cultural Art Center, for benefit of The Art & Music Factory. Runners can help raise money for these local charities, while enjoying Santa to the Sea’s flat, fast and festive course. More than 4,000 people are expected to take part in the 7th Annual Santa to the Sea Half Marathon, relay race and 5k on Dec. 14 in Oxnard.
Last year, nearly $33,000 was raised for the charities.
“We’re helping the community any way we can. The purpose of the race is to bring toys to underprivileged kids in Ventura County and raise money for scholarships,” said Mike Barber, founder of Santa to the Sea and race organizer. “The Charity Challenge offers yet another way individuals and corporate teams can give back to the community, get fit and have fun at the same time.”
Each charity is lead by a team captain. This year’s team captains include …
• FOODShare - Jason Hendrick, Everybody’s Hungry
• Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme - Supervisor John Zaragoza; Steve Kinney, EDCO; and, Rigo Vargas, Director of Ventura County Health Department
• The Autism Society of Ventura County - Sharon Francis, vice president of the local chapter
• Inlakech - Mexican Consul of Oxnard Berenice Diaz
• Future Leaders of America - TBD
Each charity will offer its own incentives to people who are helping raise funds to keep them motivated and reward their efforts. Incentives are listed on the charities’ team pages and include items such as free entries, gear and prizes.
This year, a perpetual trophy will go to the team that raises the most money for its charity and another trophy will be awarded to the charity that raises the most overall money.

Santa to the Sea is a nonprofit event borne out of a desire to give back to the community. What started in 2003 as a toy drive to celebrate the relocation of the world’s largest Santa Claus from Carpinteria to Oxnard, has grown into a robust running event, toy drive, and community fundraiser. Santa to the Sea includes a sanctioned half marathon and a 2-person half marathon relay, plus 5K run and 1K kids fun run. The Santa to the Sea Scholarship Fund partners with the Oxnard College Foundation to award $500 scholarships to local high school students and adults continuing their education at Oxnard College.
